The New York Jets traded linebacker Jonathan Vilma to the New Orleans Saints on Friday for a fourth-round draft pick in April. If Vilma reaches certain playtime incentives and signs a contract extension with New Orleans, New York would instead receive a second- or third-round pick in 2009. The Jets would then give the Saints their fourth-round pick next year.

The New York Jets made a huge splash on the first day of free agency by trading for a big guy to put in the middle of their defensive line. The Jets acquired three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kris Jenkins from the Carolina Panthers on Friday for third- and fifth-round draft picks. The 6-foot-4, 349-pound Jenkins will move to nose tackle in the Jets’ 3-4 defensive scheme.

The Houston Texans signed free agent receiver and kick returner Andre’ Davis to a multiyear contract on Friday. Davis became a star on Houston’s special teams last season, returning 32 kickoffs for 968 yards and three touchdowns. With Andre Johnson out for seven games with a knee sprain, Davis also emerged as one of Houston’s top receivers.
